This was really good. I like your take, it really signals your thinking and it's something I really appreciate. So many quotables but I really like "The world is not merely background to our private loneliness. It is relationship." It really reveals that just existing, being party to this life and all the things in it is so valuable. I could go on, I love your description of city life and how even though you're in close proximity you don't always create community and how the world can start making nature feel like an inconvenience. Super poignant work
Wow I was scared to read this but the same time could not stop. We have an epidemic of loneliness in our society but don’t want to admit it. Nice work.
This is a wonderful piece! I can sense the poetic melancholy stemming out of it. And I absolutely agree - we tend to feel the atmosphere or aura of isolation, closedness, and distance. We lose touch with who we are; our environement, the city, becomes dehumanised.
I experienced peace reading this; your writing is beautiful and very relatable. I’ve always loved the anonymity of a metropolis however, one’s existence can become too invisible at times.
This was beautifully written. The part about “contact without arrival” and learning the “choreography of distance” really stood out to me. I think a lot of people quietly feel this disconnect in modern life, especially when everything moves so quickly and constantly demands our attention. There’s something powerful about the reminder that presence and connection are not always the same thing.
This article of yours hits a spot I have really had time to decipher yet.
I enjoyed this. Really.
Also took this line out to share with others if you don't mind. I reconstructed it a bit though.
"I never want to forget the smell of soil after rain, the grey brightness of the moon, the fullness hidden within silence, the quiet intelligence of trees, the restorative depth found in darkness, the cold yet attentive night air, and the simple truth that I came into this world to live happily." 😫🖤
This was beautifully written. The idea that modern life gives us constant contact but very little real encounter is something I have felt, but you were able to put it into words so well
They gather us by the thousands, then by the millions. They place our windows across from one another, our footsteps on the same pavements, our bodies inside the same trains, offices, elevators, cafés, waiting rooms, and crossings. From a distance, the city appears almost intimate: a vast human organism lit from within, breathing through streets and stations........a very thrilling read about concurrent time....I really appreciate that you chose to write over this sensitive topic of urban loneliness...really heart touching
Beautifully written article. I strangely love the feeling of being anonymous in a big city, but I spend a lot of time with a lot of people online so it feels like a respite to have anonymity IRL.
This felt incredibly calming and grounding. I especially loved the idea that loneliness is not always something “wrong” with us, but sometimes a reflection of the world we’re trying to survive in. And the line about the body no longer being just transportation for the mind was beautiful. The whole piece feels like a gentle reminder that healing can begin in very small, quiet moments.
this reflection is deeply moving n captures the quiet ache of modern isolation with beautiful lyricism.. your opening definition of loneliness is exceptionally strong, n lines like the choreography of distance are genuinely brilliant.. keep it up!

"We become more reactive than receptive, more stimulated than nourished, more connected to signals than to presence."
This stuff is so reall, reading this kind of essay was worth it.

I grew up in urban loneliness. A past version
of me can definitely relate.
The concept of being surrounded by people and still feeling alone. Peak.
